English-study Experience

English is an international language but too difficult to learn to different-culture people. There are thousands of words we should remember, and too many complex grammars to be applicated. Fortunatelly, I live in Edinburgh now, and have more opportunities to learn English, and I'd like to record the process of learning English and collect some good english passage in different situations...

What A Nice Day

It's really wonderful; I get Ielts result this morning, 6.5, that is the score I need all the time. Thanks god.

Listening 5.5, Reading 7, Writing 6, Speaking 7, Overall 6.5. Many thanks to the speaking examiner, she scores me 7, a…, that is amazing, I thought my speaking is the weakest among these abilities, and I felt nervous in part2&3, also, I found some obvious mistakes during the process, so 7 is a big surprise to me, instead what I guessed is 5 or 6. The main reason is the extra communication out of speaking test.

At the end of Ielts writing test, I found a mistake on candidate No. and gave her a report, she said she would check my name with it, so didn’t worry about it. That was the first time I had spoken to her. At about 3 o’clock that afternoon, I was so nervous and compel myself to be calm down, and then she came in, I said to her that was my turn, she smiled to me and asked me how I knew. Good impression I stood.

Even though I did very well in the first part, but the longer I took it, the more mistakes I made. She asked me some questions about leadership abilities and whether it was mainly coming from born or not. I felt a little nervous and spoke a little quick, that was perfect she scored me 7. May be it is truth that my English is really improving so much. Fabulous!

The listening looks a little lower when I guess it may be 6, indeed, when I did the listening part, I found there were so many blanks in it which made me become nervous, and I couldn't concentrate on listening at that time, that I would take another ielts exam next time because my plan was 6.5 or more in listening, so 5.5 is the correct score I guessed at that time.

Even though I am good at writing, I also did badly and made too many stupid mistakes. 6 is my past score, and I am sure I could do better in writing.

Correct score in listening and writing, big surprises happen in reading and speaking. Thanks Jesus!

English ability goes down

Nothing is stable all the time; nothing is in a sole trend all the time. Recently I find my English skills went down obviously, I don’t mind; just try my best to keep learning. Holiday is coming, I won’t go back hometown due to little achievement I made during recent months. No money income, only pay out, that is me, oh, my god, what should I do next.

Problem in Speaking

When the writing skill is up, the speaking skill is down, that is me, that is the truth. I find a truth that one person would nearly improve nothing in speaking a new language if he stayed with people who spoke their mother language all the time. That’s happen to me, I found myself in an speaking English black hole, and I can’t go out until I move to a new flat to live with other international people. Bad news.

Getting a diagnosis - BBC Health

Dr Rob Hicks
Watch any TV medical drama and you'll see diagnoses being made within minutes. Unfortunately, in the real world reaching such conclusions can take a little longer.

Process of elimination
To make a correct diagnosis a GP has to explore all the possible reasons for your symptoms, and that can take time.
Let's say that you're always feeling tired. This could be due to many different reasons: a thyroid gland disorder, stress, depression, noisy neighbours, diabetes or a chronic infection, to name but a few. Through careful questioning, examination and tests, your GP eliminates the suspects and solves your problem: you're anaemic.
A child who's described by her parents as 'hyperactive' or 'difficult' may eventually be diagnosed as having a hyperactivity disorder. But in the meantime, it's important to rule out other possible causes. It may actually be normal behaviour that just doesn't fit with the parents' expectations or social norms. It may reflect another problem, such as bullying or jealousy of a sibling. Or an infection and pain may be making the child behave this way.
It's not uncommon for this process of elimination to be slow and require a number of visits to the doctor. And even once a diagnosis has been made, it doesn't mean it will be plain sailing from then on.

Treatment options
When a particular treatment is clearly of benefit, it's usually easy to decide what to do. But this isn't always the case.
Some people argue medicine is an art, not a science. There are very few black and white answers. There's an abundance of grey, and the amount is increasing as more information about diseases becomes available.
Sometimes the information available to help you choose isn't crystal clear, either. It's full of possibilities, pros and cons, and risks and benefits of doing one thing or another.
Often, it's not even possible for doctors to make a clear diagnosis, even after specialist tests and advice. This can be hard to accept; after all, they always solve the problem on TV.
Understandably you may feel frustrated when all you want is what's best for you and no one, not even your doctor, can tell you what this is. Only time will tell and in the meantime you have to take responsibility for making the decision about treatment.
It's not easy. You may find yourself going round in circles, consciously seeking advice from others while subconsciously wanting someone else to make the decision for you.

Decision making
Making a decision can be difficult at the best of times. With so much choice available, people often struggle to make up their minds even when the best option seems obvious. But in the end, a decision has to be made. It's important that this is done with all the information currently available and with the full support of those around you.
Talk any decisions through with your doctor until you feel confident about what you're going to do. Only the future will tell whether you've chosen the right course. If it doesn't work out, you should accept that at the time you made the decision you were doing what you thought was best.

Goodbye Ielts Test

I was very pleased after the test was finished one hour ago even though I felt no good in the test. In the morning, when the listening test began, I looked the questions quickly and found many filling blanks in session 3 and 4. That made me a little nervous. When I listened to the materials, I found I couldn’t focus on it so I didn’t do well in this part. Reading followed, and most of them were the questions of choosing, not very hard, but not very sure about the answers. Similar to last time I took ielts, I started to indulge it in writing part and felts not bad. In the afternoon, I tried my best to be calm down, but not very much success. I felt well in the first part, but a little nervous in the second tune, the topic is about a decision I had made, not too difficult, and I tried my best to say as much as possible, but not accurate I felt. In the third part, the examiner asked me some questions about leadership ability and something about decision, not well, but not bad yet, I couldn’t get a right guess.

I feel more relaxed that the test has finished and I am free now. These two days, I felt nothing is good due to the worries about the test, now everything passed, I need a rest.

Last night’s feeling before Ielts test

-26/05/06-

Tomorrow, I’ll take the ielts test, but I get no strong feeling from this afternoon after some prepares, much different with many worries I felt several days ago.

This morning, I did some listening practice. To my surprise, I felt very well due to the good result, if I could keep the statue, I am sure to get a good result tomorrow. I did 4 pieces of practices, and got over 30 right answers in each piece, that would nearly equal grade 7. Now my aim is overall 6.5 while speaking and reading are 6.0, and there was at least a 7 grade in writing and listening.

God bless me!

Success in writing

Today I got the result of last mock test. Not surprise in my listening and reading test, but a very big surprise in writing that I got grade 7 in task 1 and 8 in task 2.

When listening and reading abilities become much lower than I expect, I have a great progress in writing. The main reason I think is due to this blog, and I keep writing in these three weeks, also, I built up a new international student’s blog to record something happened in my vision. Ielts becomes more and more horrible to me when I got little right answers in reading even though I nearly have no problem on reading passages online. The sentences given to identify yes or not are the most difficult that some of them are hard to be determined and I often got no marks in this session when the answer is not given. On writing tests, I feel more confident than before, may be that is my teacher’s aim – sign high grade to make students more confident. Indeed, I am good at writing in ielts test because I feel quite well when I read what I wrote. Thanks god, but please bless me have good behaviours on listening and speaking.

Throw-away society – sample writing in task 2

Many people say that we have developed into a “throw-away society”, because we are filling up our environment with so many plastic bags and rubbish that we cannot fully dispose of. To what degree do you agree with this opinion and what measures can you recommend to reduce this problem?

It’s often said that our times see such a throw-away society that we are surrounded by rubbish. As far as I am concerned, this general belief is no exaggeration. When you visit a place of interest, you are sure to see everywhere plastic bags, sacks, drinks bottles, cans and other kinds of rubbish. Walk along the street on a windy day, and you are most likely to be pursued by flying white litter. As a matter of fact, this problem of pollution becomes increasingly serious that it is high time to take effective measures to deal with it.

First of all, people have to be taught the awareness of environment protection. One important reason why many people litter around is that they have a very slight, if any, idea of environment protection. They are indifferent to the issue because of their misconception that they are safeguarded against epidemic diseases and other pollution-relevant hazards as long as their home environment is clean and safe. Only when they learn the importance of environment protection can they possibly get rid of their harmful habits of littering around.

Secondly, the use of plastic bags and other similar kinds of wrapping materials should be curbed. We can restore the tradition of taking a basket when going to the bazaar for food. Moreover, the plastic boxes used as the fast food container can be replaced with paper ones, which are easier to be disposed of.

Last but not least, science and technology have great roles to play in the campaign of fighting pollution. Modern science and technology can empower us to cope with the increasing amount of rubbish and even to turn the waste into useful things.

These measures may not be everything in combating pollution, but they are certainly vital. By taking the measures we may expect to see a cleaner and safer environment.
