English-study Experience

English is an international language but too difficult to learn to different-culture people. There are thousands of words we should remember, and too many complex grammars to be applicated. Fortunatelly, I live in Edinburgh now, and have more opportunities to learn English, and I'd like to record the process of learning English and collect some good english passage in different situations...

Goodbye Ielts Test

I was very pleased after the test was finished one hour ago even though I felt no good in the test. In the morning, when the listening test began, I looked the questions quickly and found many filling blanks in session 3 and 4. That made me a little nervous. When I listened to the materials, I found I couldn’t focus on it so I didn’t do well in this part. Reading followed, and most of them were the questions of choosing, not very hard, but not very sure about the answers. Similar to last time I took ielts, I started to indulge it in writing part and felts not bad. In the afternoon, I tried my best to be calm down, but not very much success. I felt well in the first part, but a little nervous in the second tune, the topic is about a decision I had made, not too difficult, and I tried my best to say as much as possible, but not accurate I felt. In the third part, the examiner asked me some questions about leadership ability and something about decision, not well, but not bad yet, I couldn’t get a right guess.

I feel more relaxed that the test has finished and I am free now. These two days, I felt nothing is good due to the worries about the test, now everything passed, I need a rest.

Last night’s feeling before Ielts test

-26/05/06-

Tomorrow, I’ll take the ielts test, but I get no strong feeling from this afternoon after some prepares, much different with many worries I felt several days ago.

This morning, I did some listening practice. To my surprise, I felt very well due to the good result, if I could keep the statue, I am sure to get a good result tomorrow. I did 4 pieces of practices, and got over 30 right answers in each piece, that would nearly equal grade 7. Now my aim is overall 6.5 while speaking and reading are 6.0, and there was at least a 7 grade in writing and listening.

God bless me!

Success in writing

Today I got the result of last mock test. Not surprise in my listening and reading test, but a very big surprise in writing that I got grade 7 in task 1 and 8 in task 2.

When listening and reading abilities become much lower than I expect, I have a great progress in writing. The main reason I think is due to this blog, and I keep writing in these three weeks, also, I built up a new international student’s blog to record something happened in my vision. Ielts becomes more and more horrible to me when I got little right answers in reading even though I nearly have no problem on reading passages online. The sentences given to identify yes or not are the most difficult that some of them are hard to be determined and I often got no marks in this session when the answer is not given. On writing tests, I feel more confident than before, may be that is my teacher’s aim – sign high grade to make students more confident. Indeed, I am good at writing in ielts test because I feel quite well when I read what I wrote. Thanks god, but please bless me have good behaviours on listening and speaking.

Throw-away society – sample writing in task 2

Many people say that we have developed into a “throw-away society”, because we are filling up our environment with so many plastic bags and rubbish that we cannot fully dispose of. To what degree do you agree with this opinion and what measures can you recommend to reduce this problem?

It’s often said that our times see such a throw-away society that we are surrounded by rubbish. As far as I am concerned, this general belief is no exaggeration. When you visit a place of interest, you are sure to see everywhere plastic bags, sacks, drinks bottles, cans and other kinds of rubbish. Walk along the street on a windy day, and you are most likely to be pursued by flying white litter. As a matter of fact, this problem of pollution becomes increasingly serious that it is high time to take effective measures to deal with it.

First of all, people have to be taught the awareness of environment protection. One important reason why many people litter around is that they have a very slight, if any, idea of environment protection. They are indifferent to the issue because of their misconception that they are safeguarded against epidemic diseases and other pollution-relevant hazards as long as their home environment is clean and safe. Only when they learn the importance of environment protection can they possibly get rid of their harmful habits of littering around.

Secondly, the use of plastic bags and other similar kinds of wrapping materials should be curbed. We can restore the tradition of taking a basket when going to the bazaar for food. Moreover, the plastic boxes used as the fast food container can be replaced with paper ones, which are easier to be disposed of.

Last but not least, science and technology have great roles to play in the campaign of fighting pollution. Modern science and technology can empower us to cope with the increasing amount of rubbish and even to turn the waste into useful things.

These measures may not be everything in combating pollution, but they are certainly vital. By taking the measures we may expect to see a cleaner and safer environment.

Worry on Reading

Without any worry in writing now, I am so disappointed in my reading mock test this morning, I spent nearly half an hour on passage1 and 25 minutes on passage 2, so the time on the last passage is only 5 minutes available to me, that’s impossible to get a grade. Recently I got an email from the university which requires me to get a minimum 6.5 on overall score and no less than 6.0 in every parts of Ielts exams. The nearer it comes to me, the less impossible to me I felt. Very terrible sign!

I remember clearly the situation in the real test room. I took the exam one year ago, and in the first 3rd parts I felt very nervous and couldn’t help having at that time. I felt terrible on reading last time, but the result looked not bad, that I got 5.5 score. I really hope I can get at least 6.0 grade at this time, even though I am not on the statue now.
